Barbados is one of the most romantic islands in the Caribbean and I consider ourselves extremely lucky to be able to experience it – every, single, day. With crystal blue seas, picturesque green gardens and breathtaking historic sites, Barbados’ romantic nature appeals to all.
So here are what we consider to be some of the most romantic spots on the island!
1. St. Nicholas Abbey
An architectural marvel, being one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere, ‘St.Nicholas Abbey‘ has a great deal of charm, character and history. And to be honest, if you didn’t care much about the historic nature of ‘St.Nicholas Abbey’, nor the breathtaking architecture, you’ll love the landscape.
Date Ideas:
Be Tourists For A Day – take a tour of the great house and watch the traditional method of producing rum which can be seen in operation from January to June!
Lunch Date – enjoy the impeccably kept gardens as well as the natural gullies over lunch for two. To be honest, it’s on the pricier side of things but this experience is one of a kind!
2. The Animal Flower Cave
The ‘Animal Flower Cave’, affectionately named after the sea anemones that reside in the ocean filled pools within the cave, is located at the northern end of the island, where you will find high cliffs overlooking the ocean.
Date Ideas:
Be Explorers – It’s an amazing sight to poke a sea anemone and watch as it immediately closes. Although the vast majority of the sea anemones are no longer around, see how many you can actually find!
Wine and Dine – It’s also quite spectacular to watch nature at work as the waves break angrily, a mere few feet away. Treat your partner to lunch at ‘The Restaurant’ and enjoy the views!
3. The Welchman Hall Gully
‘The Welchman Hall Gully‘ is truly a hidden natural gem! With over one hundred and fifty species of plants and trees, one could spend hours roaming throughout “the gully”.
Date Idea:
Have a Picnic – Enjoy the panoramic views of the east coast with a romantic picnic at the gazebo. Even if you don’t want to walk with your own picnic basket, “the gully” has a fully stocked café – The Chunky Monkey Cafe!
4. Codrington College
Completed in 1748, ‘Codrington College’ serves as the grounds for the first institution of higher learning in the West Indies. Not only is the architecture, the carvings of scriptures and other religious texts awe-inspiring, but the entrance alone is a sight to behold.
Date Idea:
Feed The Fish and Ducks – With a magnificent lily pond filled with fish (and nearby wandering ducks), this is definitely a romantic way to spend the day – and it’s free! Be sure to pack a few sandwiches (for yourself of course) and enjoy the breathtaking view of the scenic east coast which lies beyond the entrance and through the arches of the college.
5. Hunte’s Gardens
Created by horticulturist Anthony Hunte, ‘Hunte’s Gardens’ without a doubt has a reserved spot in our top 7. Quite frankly, it’s one of our favourite spots because even if you aren’t a nature-loving enthusiast, you somehow get sucked into the majestic nature of this one of a kind gem- and then suddenly you become a nature-loving freak!
Seriously, how did he manage to create something so majestic from a sinkhole? Freaking legendary!
Date Idea:
Disconnect From Technology – turn off your phone and take in the experience. Mr Hunte has done an amazing job of having multiple nooks throughout the garden. So take a journey throughout the garden and just enjoy the peace and quiet with your significant other!
6. Harrison Point Lighthouse
This abandoned lighthouse is one of our favourite spots on the island due to its privacy and the breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean.
Date Idea:
Wine and Cheese – Every time we’ve been to the lighthouse we have carried some form of drinks, whether it was a couple of Smirnoffs, a couple of Seagrams or even a bottle of wine. If you want to get fancy, take a wine and cheese basket and enjoy the sunset at the very top of the lighthouse!
7. Bottom Bay Beach
Located in the parish of St Philip, ‘Bottom Bay‘ is a secluded beach with bright blue waters and idyllic swaying palm trees. As this beach is located on the southeast side of the island, it is known for it’s less than favourable swimming conditions, but it’s certainly picturesque and for the most part secluded.
Date Idea:
Sushi On The Beach – up your picnic game and grab a bento box or even make your own because sushi is always a great idea but sushi on the beach is even better!
